What is Supply Chain Management?

Supply chain management (SCM) is the complete process of overseeing raw materials, money, and information through a diverse network of storage and transportation connections. This system of management is usually applicable to manufacturers, wholesalers, and consumers. Managing the supply chain is a continuous process in which coordination of the flow of raw materials and others from manufacturer to wholesaler to consumer, and in reverse, for customer returns is constant monitored.

INTRODUCTION

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the systemic, strategic coordination of the traditional business functions within a particular company and across businesses within the supply chain for the purpose of improving the long-term performance of the individual companies and the supply chain as a whole. A supply chain consists of all parties involved, directly or indirectly in fulfilling a customer request. The supply chain not only includes the manufacturer and the supplier but also transporters, warehouses, retailers, and customers themselves. Within each organization, such as a manufacturer, the supply chain includes all the functions involved in receiving and filling a customer request. A typical supply chain may involve a variety of stages.

The 21st century consumer is spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping for goods and services; and there is certainly a wide range of products to choose from, whatever the occasion.

But it’s probably fair to say that very few people ever stop to consider how the goods actually end up in their current form in the first place; from an idea in someone’s head to the factory floor, then transported on the back of a truck and taken to their local department store. Indeed, from a customer’s point of view, there is probably very little reason to ever consider the journey a product has taken to get to their front room.
