The ability of any asset management syste, to remain current and effective becomes drastically reduced without an efficient means of data collection. Any data collection process that is completed manually, by its very nature, will immediately become stale and outdated upon completion. The only means by which an inventory can remain fluid, organic, and up-to-date is by having an automated process update the database.
Currently, the most effective means to accomplish this is through the usage of Radio Frequency Identifiers (RFID). RFID’s can be either active or passive. A passive RFID has no power but when an RFID reader sends out a signal it will read and catalog all the RFID’s within range of that signal. On the other hand, active RFID’s have power and will actively transmit their signal as they move thus providing an active representation of that unit. Additionally, active RFID’s transmit more information then their passive counterparts thus providing richer data content. However, it is crucial to recognize that not all asset management software can utilize RFID technology. Regardless of which asset management software is used, both the asset management system and its utilization of RFID technology must seamlessly function within a business model. If the system can not be incorporated into the normal business flow, it will be under-utilized, or worse, counter-productive. With this in mind, RFID’s can be used very effectively to assets in a wide variety of industries when used as part of an Asset Management software, like E-ISG’s Visual Asset Manager (VAM).
